Recap 29th May 2017


Last Monday our club held its first General Assembly. As Toastmaster I decided to make the meeting very formal and followed the guidelines I learned while being part of District Leaders and attended several District meetings. I think the experience was fun, educational and brilliant. Kathrin presented the educational achievement we have reached during this year. Alexis presented how our membership has grown and Catalina presented the clubs treasury report. We elected a committee for 2017/2018. The results are:

Congratulations on your election.
In order to have speeches and evaluations so members could move forward on their paths we squeezed in two prepared speeches by Violette and Lucia. Violette gave a speech on how to be tidy and get rid of things we don’t need. This is a subject that we have discussed and heard previously so I know our group really likes and appreciates it. Apparently many of us enjoy getting tips on how to be tidier and how to declutter our lives. Alexis gave good insights on how Violette can improve her presentations further. Lucia did a good job to inspire us with power that cross-country skiing is THE sport to take up. It can make you healthy, slim, enjoy nature and allow you to eat lots after your efforts, in other words enjoy life. Kathrin pointed out how vividly Lucia expressed herself and how this added to her inspiring words.
Caroline ended off the meeting by giving us an educational about the importance to be properly introduced as a speaker. There were many take aways from her presentation.
Our room was filled to the brim. We even had to bring extra chairs so the 20 participants had a place to sit. Unfortunately the meeting did not allow for everyone to express themselves and in the future it might be an idea to limit the prepared speeches and have table topics instead at the meeting when the General Assembly is planned.
Afterwards we enjoyed the apéro as usual.
Next meeting is on the 12th June.

Recap 15th May 2017


It was a very interesting meeting last Monday, almost surreal.
Nine members had signed up of which three were the speakers. So we knew in advance that everyone would need to step up and take on multiple roles.
What we didn’t know or expect were that there was a massive car accident in the Neuchâtel tunnel and the consequence of this was that three members didn’t arrive on time.
However, by being bold, courageous and stepping into their leadership roles the members decided to get the meeting started.
Sam was the Toastmaster. Alexis presented a story from the story-telling manual and Giselle took the audience to her hometown Porrentruy. I cannot add much about their performance as I was one that was stuck in traffic.
Mario and I arrived just in time to hear Susanne give her 10th speech from the Competent Communicator. It is great to see how confident she has become while presenting and how she masters the contact with the audience via her eye-contact, body language and vocal variety.
Susanne, congratulations for reaching this important milestone in your Toastmasters’ journey!
During table topics Mario challenged us to do impromptu evaluations on the speakers. Although Sam, Lucia and Caroline had performed regular evaluations, the speakers received additional tips. Alexis had to evaluate himself and this seemed to put him in a new and challenging situation. The recommendation is to have fun with and about yourself, and be confident if you get to make a self-evaluation in the future.
The evening ended with a fun and intimate apéro. Just like old times!
Our next meeting is on the 29th May and I sincerely hope that most of our members will show up. We will have our annual general assembly and the new committee will be elected.

Recap 1st May 2017


We had a BRILLIANT meeting last Monday, 1st May.

For the second time in a row everyone were in their seats, ready to start ,when I announced the meeting opened precisely at 18h30! Keep it up to be on time.

Our guest, Valentina, a Toastmaster in the Lausanne International club enthusiastically took the role as our ah-counter. During the reports she announced thorough observations about our filler words. She was brilliant in her task and gave Lakeshore members some interesting twists on how we use filler words.

Because it was labor day Andreea had choosen “Laborious” as the word of the day. With great confidence she gave us a detailed description what the word means and how it can be used in different situation. Although we had plenty of opportunities to use the word it ended up only 3 times during the evening.

Laurence gave an in-depth presentation about Franchising. Mario’s observations included how well her speech was organized, how she appeared confident in her role as a speaker and how she could tweak the use of the stage to connect better with all of the audience.
Catalina talked about failure and her relationship to her own failures. Her project was “vocal variety” and I, Helene, encouraged her to consider that her voice can color her thoughts and emotions and it can be an instrument that it is worth practicing and mastering to skillfully influence her audience.
Lastly, Olivier opened our eyes to how to recognize fraudulent gems, specially saphires and rubies. With great visual aids and in a comfortable manner he gave the information. Stephanie had organized her evaluation in an excellent manner and had good observations and encouraging comments.

Our table topics, presented by Susanne, were all about the meaning of 1st of May and labor day.
In colorful words, fun commentaries, unexpected twist and strong convictions the speakers entertained the audience.

The timing was masterfully monitored by Omar and Andreea had many comments on how we used grammar, sentences, and quotes during the evening. Kathrin praised her team for carrying out the roles with brilliance.

Lucia championed the whole event as the Toastmaster of the Evening.

As always the meeting was followed by our traditional apéro with more stories and fun.
